                                                                                          “Joy” is a feeling that comes from a sense of well-being or contentment.

                                                                                       Hopefully, we will all feel the joy this month as we make our plans to decorate;
                                                                                       we cook those traditional family recipes; and we shop, shop, shop!
                  mon t h                                                              Exercise stretches our minds as well as our bodies. (The laughter comes when
                                                                                          But this is really an even more important time to take care of ourselves!
                                                                                       we start doing the four-way hip stretch. Ever feel like a pretzel?) Of course, any
                                                                                       exercise program lets you set your own pace.  Our exercise program is not a
                                                                                       race, but basically easy movement of all your body parts.  The class begins at
                                                                                       10:00 a.m. every Tuesday and Thursday and lasts for an hour. Bring your own
                                                                                       hand weights or use ours, and make sure to wear loose, comfortable clothing.
                                                                                          Stay after exercise class on Tuesday, December 12, for a cup of coffee
                                                                                       or a glass of iced tea and a talk at 11:00 a.m. by a representative from the
                                                                                       Department of Aging.  The talk will be ”How to Survive the Holidays” (with
                                                                                       chocolate hopefully!); Nurse Steve’s talk on December 19 will be “Is Laughter
                                                                                       Really the Best Medicine?” (Guess what that answer will be!)
                                                                                          After exercise on Thursdays, stick around while Linda, our center
                                                                                       coordinator, tries to stump us with “Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader”
                                                                                       type questions. These questions really stretch our minds, but with many groans
                                                                                       and much laughter, we do very well!
                                                                                          Lunch is at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday through Friday for the suggested price of
                                                                                       $3.00. Just call Linda Umbel at 301-600-6350 two days prior, so she can order
                                                                                       your lunch. Senior Center food is not gourmet, but it’s actually very good,
                                                                                       varied, and nutritionally balanced. Some days feature soup and sandwiches,
                                                                                       other lunch days feature meat, potatoes, and a hot vegetable, and there’s
                                                                                       always fruit and milk. And, again, at the suggested price of $3.00, that’s a
                                                                                       real bargain. Stop in and get a copy of the monthly menu plan, as well as the
                                                                                       schedule of activities.
                                                                                          The variety of activities are planned to try and fit the variety of our interests
                                                                                       and the time we are willing to commit. And we’re always open to suggestions.
                                                                                       The card games on Thursdays and Fridays after lunch are a good opportunity
                                                                                       to relax and to enjoy the company of others (lots of laughter here, especially
                                                                                       when we don’t remember whose deal it is!).
                                                                                          The Emmitsburg Senior Center has a need for volunteers to deliver the
                                                                                       Meals on Wheels to residents in the rural Emmitsburg/Thurmont area on
                                                                                       Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Please call Linda for details. You could be of
                                                                                       great assistance to our homebound residents.
