Friends of L’Arche Frederick Maryland
An extraordinary journey is unfolding in Frederick, and it all began in
Northern Frederick County, specifically at Mount Saint Mary’s University
in Emmitsburg. Approximately six years ago, two Emmitsburg residents—
Jeanne Kuhn and Father Jim Donohue of Mount Saint Mary’s University—
recruited several individuals who were interested in establishing a residential
community with the philosophy of L’Arche. L’Arche, which means “The
Ark” in French, is an international organization founded in 1964 to build
community and provide lifelong homes where people with and without
disabilities live together. L’Arche also strongly supports a faith-based
community that is open to all religions and faiths. There are currently one
hundred forty L’Arche communities around the world, but none in Maryland.
For several years, Jeanne, Father Jim, and this small group of professionals
and friends, met monthly at Mount Saint Mary’s University to learn more
about L’Arche and to plan and establish a L’Arche community in Frederick
County. Eventually, the planning committee decided it would be most
beneficial if a community was established in Frederick City, but open to all
Frederick County residents. The planning committee originally took the
name Quest for L’Arche, but has since adopted the name Friends of L’Arche
Frederick Maryland as its legal name, and as it has come into relation Special Valenne’s Day Brunch February 14th.

organized and lead the Best Buds group. She has described her experience with
the Friends of L’Arche Friday night events as a “beautiful gift to present to
people with disabilities—some of whom cannot speak.” “Whenever I come to
these events,” expressed McGrath, “I am reminded of the importance of just
being present to people. There are so many different ways to communicate
with people. Sometimes it might be simply sitting next to someone and being
there with your whole heart and your whole mind.” We’re
McGrath said she was inspired by the theology of Jean Vanier, a Catholic
theologian and founder of L’Arche. “He talks a lot about how we are called honored to
