William (Gene) Eugene Martin

February 6, 1951 – June 29, 2025
William Eugene Martin—known to family and friends simply as Gene—passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 29, 2025. He was 74.
Born in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, to William Murray Martin and Gloria (Joy) Martin Bauerline, Gene spent most of his life in the close-knit communities of Northern Maryland. A proud graduate of Catoctin High School’s Class of 1970, he went on to serve his country in the U.S. Navy, where his deep sense of duty and sharp wit made him a loyal shipmate and a trusted friend.
After returning home, Gene made a living as a self-employed painter throughout the area. He was also known to many from his time working at Paul’s Pit Stop, where his friendly banter and steady presence were part of the charm.
Gene lived a life rich in simple pleasures. He had a sharp mind for cards, a love of the greens on a sunny golf day, and a treasure-hunter’s spirit, often seen roaming fields and trails with his metal detector in hand, always curious about the stories buried just beneath the surface.
He was predeceased by his father, William (Bill), and brother, Anthony (Tony) Martin.
Gene is survived by his devoted mother, Gloria Bauerline of Gettysburg, PA; his brothers, Dennis (Carol) Martin of Thurmont, MD, and Bruce Martin of Emmitsburg, MD; his niece Robin Dowling of Frederick, MD; and nephew Cory Martin of Cascade, MD. He also leaves behind uncles Michael (Pat) Joy of Emmitsburg, MD, and Donald Joy of Westminster, MD, as well as many cousins and lifelong friends.
At Gene’s request, there will be no formal services. A celebration of his life will be planned at a later date—one filled with stories, laughter, and perhaps a good card game or two in his honor.
