Thurmont Senior Center
by Tara Miller
As we welcome a brand new year at the Thurmont Senior Center, I’m filled with gratitude for the warmth, friendship, and enthusiasm that our community brings through our doors each day. January may be chilly, but inside the Senior Center, it’s a month full of activity, connection, and plenty of reasons to get out of the house and join us.
Our weekly Strength & Balance Class continues to be one of our most popular offerings, and I love seeing how committed everyone is to staying active and strong. It’s inspiring to watch our members cheer one another on, celebrate milestones, and show that wellness has no age limit. Our Chair Yoga class also provides a gentle and refreshing way to stretch, breathe, and start the year with intention.
For those who enjoy creativity and conversation, January brings a full lineup of crafting and social gatherings. Stitch & Chat will meet on January 5 and 19. I always look forward to hearing the laughter and stories that flow as projects come to life. If crafting is more your style, our Craftin’ in the Catoctins sessions will be held on January 15 and 29.
Games are in full swing this month as well, with Bingo scheduled for January 7 and 21. These afternoons are lively, competitive in the friendliest way, and a wonderful chance to relax and have some fun. We also have card games happening almost every afternoon, giving everyone plenty of opportunities to gather around the table, enjoy good company, and maybe pick up a new favorite game.
We will be hosting our monthly Bake Sale and Fundraiser at Roy Rogers from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on January 8. This partnership continues to be a vital support for our center, and I’m so thankful to everyone who stops by, picks up a treat, or mentions the Senior Center when placing an order. A very special thank you goes to Carol Long and Nancy Rice, who generously donate their time and baking talents each month. Their hard work and delicious creations are a big part of what makes our bake sale such a success, and we are deeply grateful for their commitment. Every little bit helps us continue the programs and services our community depends on.
We’ll celebrate our Monthly Birthday Party on January 16, and I always enjoy honoring our members and sharing in their joy. Then, on January 23, we’re hosting an All-Day Hot Cocoa & Snack Bar—a perfect way to warm up, treat yourself, and spend time with friends during the winter chill.
And of course, we continue to offer our daily lunches at noon for just $7.00. We do ask that you call a day in advance, so we can be sure to have a plate ready for you!

As we move into 2026, I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve this wonderful community. Whether you join us for a class, a craft, a cup of cocoa, or simply a chat, I hope you’ll stop by the Center this month. You are always welcome here.
