Thurmont Senior Center
by Kristen Bodmer
I neglected to congratulate all of the 2025 graduates in my last “Senior Moments” column. We are all so proud of your accomplishments. Reach for the stars.
Summer heat is here. If you need to beat the heat, come in for a visit. You will be happy you did. We always welcome visitors. You will find a friendly atmosphere that you won’t want to leave.
If you are walking by the center, you will see a caterpillar of rocks on the edge of the front of the building. We would love for you to add to our rock caterpillar to see how much he can grow!
We had the joy of having several Catoctin High School students and their advisor, Rachel Misner, come on the last day of school to help us out with moving boxes, as well as spending time with the seniors, talking, laughing, and putting a puzzle together. They then joined with Ruth’s exercise class and had a great workout. We are so thankful for the time they spent with us. We can’t wait until next year.
We had a busy June. We held two Bingos with lots of people and lots of homemade treats at halftime. We had a very successful Bake Sale at Roy Rogers—Nancy and Carol go all out for the bake sales. Don’t miss this month’s bake sale on July 10. We also enjoyed lots of fun activities like exercise and card games.
July is full of activities. Take the opportunity to take a look at the calendar of events we have scheduled. You can find our calendar on our website at thurmontseniorcenter.org, on Facebook, or come into the center and ask for one. You can also check out the Community Calendar in this issue.
We would love for you to join us for a free balance and strength exercise session daily, on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, beginning at 11:00 a.m. We play Pinochle on Tuesday at 1:00 p.m., as well as Bunko on the second Thursday of the month and Farkle on the fourth Thursday. We also play Bingo every first and third Wednesday of the month. If we have a fifth Wednesday in the month, we hold an extra Bingo. It is always a fun time, full of laughter and special homemade treats for halftime. Fridays, we have Zumba class. We also offer Poker. I would like to remind you that we have a whole corner dedicated to exercise: two treadmills and a recumbent bicycle for use during 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. There is no charge to use this equipment.
I can’t forget to mention our coffee. We are told it is the best! Come in and have a cup with us.
I have presented the Senior Center Board of Directors with my resignation. I am “retiring” to spend more time with my family, especially my eight grandchildren. I absolutely love the Thurmont Senior Center and will miss everyone. I only wish for continued great success for the center. With that said, we are hiring a Senior Center Coordinator. We are a 501(C)3 employer; you would be a 1099 employee, and there are no benefits with this position. We are looking for an individual who is outgoing, energetic, a multi-tasker, and senior friendly. The deadline for applications is July 15. Drop your resume off or fill out an application at the center.
As always, if you have questions, don’t hesitate to call us at 301-271-7911.
