Thurmont Senior Center
by Kristen Bodmer

Summer is here. I hope you are all taking the time to enjoy the beautiful weather. But, if you need to beat the heat, come in for a visit. You will be happy you did.
We hit a new record in April with a total of 650 meals served, 255 of those meals being delivered. I am so happy that we offer meal delivery for those who are homebound. We have also had an increase in lunches being picked up. So, don’t worry; if you see something on the menu you would like, but you can’t come in to eat, you can order it and pick it up anytime that afternoon. We have such a great lunch program—you need to come in and try it.
We had a busy and fun-filled May. We held two Bingos with lots of people and lots of homemade treats at halftime. We had a successful Bake Sale Fundraiser at Roy Rogers. Nancy and Carol go all out for the bake sales. You don’t want to miss next month’s Bake Sale on June 12, 2025, at Roy Rogers in Thurmont.
We also enjoyed lots of fun activities like exercise and card games during the month of May—lots of laughter and fun times were had by all.
June is full of activities as well. Take the opportunity to take a look at the calendar of events we have scheduled. You can find our calendar on the website at thurmontseniorcenter.org, on Facebook, or come into the center and ask for one. Also, check the Community Calendar in this issue for event dates and times.
We would love you to join us for a free balance and strength exercise session daily on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, beginning at 11:00 a.m. Get yourself moving and feeling good!
We play many games at the Thurmont Senior Center, including Pinochle on Tuesday at 1:00 p.m., Bunko on the second Thursday of the month at 1:00 p.m., and Farkle on the fourth Thursday at 1:00 p.m. We also play Bingo every first and third Wednesday of the month (if the month has a fifth Wednesday, we have an extra Bingo). I also can’t forget to mention our coffee—we are told it is the best! So, come in and enjoy a cup with us. On Fridays, we hold Zumba class. Some activities may have a minimal cost, but to join the center is free.
Want to come in and exercise? We have a whole corner dedicated to fitness. We have two treadmills and a recumbent bicycle for use during our hours, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. There is no charge to use the exercise equipment.
We have some of the best volunteers around. Did you know that there is a Maryland Senior Citizens Hall of Fame? We have had several—nine, to be exact—seniors nominated and honored in The Senior Citizen Hall of Fame. We have had winners consecutively for 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2017, and then again in 2022, 2023, and 2024. We are waiting to hear if our nominee Kaye Isanogle will be the 2025 winner. It just goes to show how wonderful and top-notch our volunteers are. Thank you to all who volunteer at our center. We could not do it without you.
As always if you have questions don’t hesitate to call us at 301-271-7911.
