Thurmont Senior Center
by Kristen Bodmer
Winter has brought us some crazy weather this year. We have had to close a few times due to bad weather. We want to keep all of our seniors safe. If you weren’t able to make it in last month, make a plan to come on in this month. I know you have been wanting to, so just do it. Now, I know what you are saying to yourself. You are saying, I am not going; that place is for old people. Guess what? You are only as old as you feel. Believe me, sometimes I feel 20 years old again, and sometimes, I feel like I am 90. I would love for some new people to start coming in and seeing just how much fun you can have at the Thurmont Senior Center. We are for anyone 55 years and older.
March is full of activities. Don’t forget to call the center or check online to get an updated calendar for our lunches and activities for March. We always have fun things planned and would love to have you participate. Take the opportunity to take a look at the calendar of events we have scheduled. You can find our calendar on the website at thurmontseniorcenter.org, on Facebook, or come into the center and ask for one.
February was an enjoyable month. We had busy lunches, and we also delivered a lot of lunches. We had two great Bingos. We stretched and exercised. We played Farkle, Hand and Foot, Pinochle, and Poker. We laughed and laughed. We also had coffee, tea, and goodies, galore. We held our monthly birthday party, where we had cake and ice cream and celebrated everyone who had a February birthday. You just never know how much fun you can have. We would love for you to join us for some fun and fellowship.
We have a free balance and strength exercise session daily, on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, beginning at 11:00 a.m. We play Pinochle on Tuesday at 1:00 p.m., Bunko on the second Thursday of the month at 1:00 p.m., and Farkle on the fourth Thursday at 1:00 p.m. We also play Bingo every first, third, and fifth Wednesday of the month. It is always a great time, full of laughter and special homemade treats for halftime.
Come in and try a cup of our coffee! We are told it is the best. On Fridays, we have Zumba and Poker. We also have a Veterans Coffee on the third Thursday of the month, where Veterans and their families can come and have some coffee, snacks, and fellowship with other Veterans. Marie Free offers seated massage on the third Thursday of the month for $1.00 a minute (first come, first served). Just a reminder that some activities may have a minimal cost but to join the center is absolutely free.
At the center, we also have a treadmill, a recumbent bicycle, and an elliptical for use daily at no cost.
Just a reminder that if Frederick County Public Schools are closed due to weather, the Thurmont Senior Center is closed as well, with no lunches being served. If they have a two-hour delay, we will open at our regular time of 9:00 a.m. If for some reason, schools are already closed because of a holiday or teacher-in-service day and the snow emergency plan is in effect, we are closed.
Planning a baby shower, a bridal shower, or a birthday party? The Thurmont Senior Center is available to rent. Call us for more information.
We are a 501(c)(3) organization that does not get county funding. We rely on donations, grants, and fundraisers. We are so very thankful for those who have been so generous to us. We could use donations of water, soda, and snacks, if you would like some suggestions.
As always, if you have questions, please don’t hesitate to call us at 301-271-7911.

Everyone is enjoying some Bingo fun at the Thurmont Senior Center.

A Celebration of Life is held at the Thurmont Senior Center for seniors who recently passed away.
