One might be hard-pressed to find another small town that rallies with such strong support for a great cause. From pink house lights to community members and businesses sporting pink shirts and displays, it is clear that Thurmont is on a mission to help fight breast cancer.
At a recent Town of Thurmont meeting, Patty Hurwitz was present to receive a check in the amount of $25,000 from the proceeds raised through a variety of Gateway to a Cure events, including a 5K, a golf tournament, and a pub crawl, just to name a few.
Local businesses also made specific donations to Gateway to a Cure.
This marked the largest annual contribution in the program’s 12-year history, bringing the organization’s total donations to $213,000 since its inception.
Patty Hurwitz and her husband, Jeff, founded Gateway to a Cure following Patty’s breast cancer diagnosis in 1999, with a goal of bringing comprehensive breast cancer care to the Frederick area—and the nonprofit has done just that.
Over the past 25 years, Frederick County residents have gained access to advanced medical technology and services, including 3D and CAD mammography systems, a breast coil for MRI imaging, curved paddles designed to improve the comfort of mammograms, biopsy equipment, and the fully funded Medical Oncology Suite at the James M. Stockman Cancer Institute, along with special enhancements to the Breast Center at Frederick Health.

The Town of Thurmont presents the Hurwitz Breast Cancer Fund with a donation of $25,000 from proceeds raised from Gateway to a Cure.
