Thurmont Lion’s Club 2026 American Heritage, Preservation and Patriotism Essay Contest

The Thurmont Lions Club and the Lions Clubs of District 22-W know how important it is to share our American Heritage and how to use that knowledge to inspire volunteerism.

July 4, 2026, marks 250 years of American independence from Great Britain since July 4, 1776. As we reflect and celebrate this important milestone for the United States of America, we can take this opportunity to learn about the brave men who made this possible. This year’s essay contest will be based on the founding fathers of the United States of America that signed the Declaration of Independence on August 2, 1776.

The contest will include Heritage, Preservation, and Patriotism. They hope you will consider taking part in their essay contest.

The Thurmont Lion’s Club is sponsoring the essay contest for local students in the Catoctin feeder schools, including Mother Seton School and adults. The theme for the 2025-2026 contest is “Together as One.” Essay topics are as follows:

Elementary School (Grades 1-5): What if the Declaration of Independence had a secret code leading to hidden treasure? Where do you think it would be hidden and why?

Middle School (Grades 6-8): Imagine you are a colonist. Write what you think about the Declaration of Independence.

High School {Grades 9-12): Pick one founding father that signed the Declaration of Independence. What motivated them to risk their lives and fortunes by declaring independence from Great Britain? How does their service and sacrifice inspire you to serve your community?
