The Thurmont Historical Society celebrated dedication, service, and community during its annual Membership Dinner, where two longtime supporters were presented with the Damuth Award.
The award is named after Howard Ralph Damuth, a lifelong resident of Thurmont. Damuth was an active member of his church, community, and local politics, which included serving many years on the Thurmont School Board, the Frederick County Historical, Republican State Central Committee, Lions Club, Masonic Lodge, The IOOF, the fire company, and the Thurmont Historical Society. Most importantly, Damuth spent much of his time researching and documenting the town’s history.
The Damuth Award, established in 1990, is given to recognize a member of the society who has made a great contribution, and it is given at the discretion of the Thurmont Historical Society President.
This year, Thurmont Historical Society President Caylee Winpigler presented the Damuth Award to Mrs. Patricia Weddle and Mrs. Viola Noffsinger, two members whose dedication spans decades.
Winpigler praised Patricia Weddle as “a tremendous resource and wealth of information about the organization,” noting her longstanding support and warm presence. “Her wit and vast knowledge are something many look forward to.” Winpigler said.
Winpigler also honored Viola Noffsinger, describing her as “another keystone member” who continues to volunteer faithfully. Whether assisting with events, supporting fundraisers, or helping beautify the Society’s grounds, Noffsinger’s commitment has remained unwavering.
The Membership Dinner was also a moment to reflect on the Society’s progress over the past year. Winpigler highlighted key accomplishments, including the addition of five new board members and an intern; welcoming more than 800 visitors; onboarding a new curator; stabilizing and archiving the Society’s collection; expanding public hours to every Sunday from March through December; growing membership; producing monthly newsletters; and developing two new exhibits.
As members gathered to share a meal and celebrate the year’s achievements, the evening served as a reminder of the enduring community spirit that has shaped the Thurmont Historical Society since its beginning.
If you are interested in becoming a volunteer or a member of the Thurmont Historical Society, visit their website at www.thurmonthistoricalsociety.org. Individual memberships are only $15.00 per year, while family memberships are $20.00.
