Each month, students from Mother Seton School’s Newspaper Club will be submitting articles from their perspective as a student.

The Almost Nine-Day Weekend

Day 1: Tuesday, January 20. Today, on Tuesday, January 20, middle school social studies teacher Mr. Brown informed each of his classes of a massive snowstorm due to roll in on Sunday, January 25. This news caused students to FLIP OUT (believe me, it was chaotic in that room) since it would likely result in no school on Monday and/or Tuesday, or even for the whole week. Expect 14-18 inches (1-1½ feet) of snow on Sunday, with a high of 15 degrees and a low of 3 degrees.

Day 2: Wednesday, January 21. New information about the snowstorm has arisen: Snow numbers have soared to 24-30 inches (2-2½ feet), guaranteeing no school next Monday. Students and teachers alike are worried that Catholic Schools Week will get (partially) snowed out.

Day 3: Thursday, January 22. The blizzard on Sunday may be more catastrophic than we thought. Expect 22-27 inches of snow in Thurmont, and up to 30 inches in some areas. Power outages may occur. I would buy flashlights and some gummy worms if I were you. You never know when you might want a gummy worm. The threat of black ice exists, too. Black iceis ice that is the same color as the road, which (as you might expect) causes a LOT of carcrashes. Officials advise to stay off the streets on Sunday. Tuesday will have a low of 0 degrees Fahrenheit (-17.7 degrees Celsius), so play in the snow on Monday (or not at all, if you wish.) Another 2-3 inches of snow is expected on Monday, so be alert for that, too.

Day 4: Friday, January 23. In the D.C area, expect 6-10+ (emphasis on the “+”) inches. In Fredrick, expect 10-14+ (again, emphasis on the “+”) inches. Kids are stocking up on snacks for the power outage, like chips, popcorn, and cookies. Bread, fruits, and drinks have been stocked up, too.

Day 5: Sunday, January 25. It’s the day of the snowstorm, and the torrent of frozen rain isn’t letting up. It started at11:00 p.m last night, and it won’t stop until 4:00 a.m.! School tomorrow has already been canceled. Kids are excited for a fun day out.

Day 6: Monday, January 26. I woke up this morning to a white field of snow! The snow numbers rose to a staggering 12 inches (1 foot)! Some kids dug up snow gear (mine consisted of one pair of snow pants; two jackets; one pair of boots, socks, gloves; and a hat. The snow is powder snow, too, soft for snowballs (unfortunately), but great to sled on.

Day 7: Tuesday, January 27. The temperature is RIDICULOUS today. Windchills are -2 degrees Fahrenheit. There was no school today, and there won’t be school on Wednesday either.

Day 8: Wednesday, January 28. It’s warmer than it was yesterday, but that’s about it. There is no school tomorrow.

Day 9: Thursday, January 29. Infuriatingly, tomorrow is a full day instead of a half day, in exchange for a two-hour delay. We almost got a full nine-day weekend…Dang!
