Students Advocate for Charter Schools in Annapolis
Members of the Sabillasville Environmental School Student Government Association (SES SGA) traveled to Annapolis on February 19 to join thousands of charter school students from across the state for Charter School Advocacy Day.
The event was organized by the non-profit Maryland Alliance for Public Charter Schools, with a goal of ensuring that elected representatives understand that charter schools are public schools too. Students were able to meet in person with many representatives in both the House and Senate to talk about their schools and ask them to ensure charter schools are taken into consideration for any bills impacting education.
SES is one of the four charter schools that are part of Frederick County Public Schools (FCPS). The schools receive a per-pupil allocation from FCPS and are run by their own Board of Directors/Trustees, who determine things like curriculum and make financial decisions for the schools. All teachers and staff are FCPS employees.
