Julie Sanders of Cascade, Maryland, was recently inducted into the Hagerstown Community College (HCC) Sports Hall of Fame.

Sanders attended HCC and, in 1986, became the record holder for shot put, discus, and javelin, and still holds the school’s record for the discus, 20 lb. weight throw and javelin.

The accolades don’t stop there. She also was a seven-time, first-place finisher in Region 20 and qualified for nationals in 1986 and 1987. Sanders would go on to continue her career at Frostburg State University, where she would go on to become the school record holder in the discus and second-highest point scorer in a two-year career.

During the induction ceremony,  Sanders  thanked all those who had supported her throughout her athletic career. While she started her career in middle school just as a way for her to get out some energy, it was in high school that she met Coach Myers, who would offer her a scholarship to attend HCC. “It was then that my life was forever changed. He turned my raw form into winning style.”

While Sanders is humbled by the award and has had some amazing opportunities, she says giving back to her community has been the best reward. Sanders came back to her alma mater, Smithsburg High School, where the team would win several state championships, and where she coached Smithsburg Youth Athletics for three years as well.
