The Blue Mountain House near the Western Maryland Railway was part of Pen Mar Park. James S. Humbird built the Ephraim Francis Baldwin-designed resort in 1882. It was the best known of the hotels in the Pen Mar, Cascade, and Blue Ridge Summit area. It was a resort built to serve wealthy visitors to the park.

Blue Mountain House had 300 rooms that could accommodate at least 500 guests. It had a large dining room, parlors, veranda, and other public areas.

A 1913 fire destroyed the building.
