Not to be Forgotten

Thurmont Lions Club 95th Charter Night Anniversary

Lion Ruth Heaney & Joyce Anthony

Excitement increased as the steps were climbed at Dutch’s Daughter restaurant. Gentle music drew guests toward the banquet room. Invitees entered through the French doors. Guests were greeted with a cordial smile and a “Good evening. Welcome,” as they received a program. An arch of blue and gold balloons led to the dining area. Tables were adorned with linen tablecloths, small bags of initialed candy, initialed coasters, and jubilantly decorated programs for each person. The true center of attention was the podium and the two large helium balloons—a nine and a five—behind the structure. Talking and laughter vibrated all around as the Thurmont Lions Club celebrated its 95th Charter Night Anniversary. It was an event of pride and joy.

The Thurmont Lions Club is prideful of its community-centered and “We Serve” history. It was in 1929 that the Club was “…formed by a group of civic-minded businessmen. With the help of some members of the Frederick Lions Club, who became their sponsor, a promotional meeting was held in the old town hall on October 23, 1929, and an open invitation was made for prospective members.” The actual charter was presented to the club on November 1, 1929.

Between 1929 and 2024, the Lions contributed much to the Thurmont community. However, there is one project that is significant to those who remember the days of the Hagerstown and Frederick Railway, and to those who walk, come rain or shine. In 2004, the Thurmont Lions Club celebrated 75 years of serving Thurmont by taking on the challenge to “…transform the Trolley Trail … from a highly neglected area into an attractive hiking/biking trail.” Through the effort of the Thurmont Lions Club, local volunteers, and the staff of the Town of Thurmont, the Trolley Trail was dedicated in September 2007. From September 2007 to today, the Trail is used for slow or fast walkers, for talking with others or taking time to enjoy nature, for the gentle sound of water or for sitting on the blue benches donated by the Lions Club.

The 95th Charter Night was joyous. District Governor Susan Cox gave district greetings. Brief remarks were made by the International Director John Lawrence. President Nancy Echard acknowledged awards and recognitions. Thurmont Mayor John Kinnaird presented the club with a Proclamation, recognizing Lion’s projects and events whose profits are given back to the community in multiple ways. Thurmont Mayor John Kinnaird was recognized as an Honorary member of the Thurmont Lions Club.

During the evening, several members were recognized by receiving awards at the club and district level. Also, Lions with significant Lion anniversaries were presented Chevron awards, and those with more than 40 years of service were acknowledged. During this powerful and exciting evening, Lion Bob Menunier celebrated his 90th birthday and was entertained by everyone singing “Happy Birthday.” For those who earned awards, congratulations. For those who mentored and supported the award winners, thank you. You were part of the award.

As the 95th Charter Night came to an end, our motto “We Serve” will continue to guide the club and be an integral part of Thurmont. There is no greater joy or pride than to serve others. Come join us. Visit our website at www.thurmontlionsclub.com.
