Mick’s Plumbing & Heating Celebrates 35 Years
Mickey Late, owner of Mick’s Plumbing & Heating, still remembers the Isuzu truck he used to launch his business 35 years ago. What began as a one-man operation has grown to 64 employees and a fleet of 49 trucks.
Late says he started the business out of necessity. He was working for Thurmont Plumbing at the time, but the economy slowed, and he had just purchased a house and had a baby on the way. When work dried up, he decided to venture out on his own.
Working from his garage, Late focused primarily on residential plumbing, relying on the skills and knowledge his uncles had taught him over the years.
As the business grew, it wasn’t long before he needed to hire employees and find a larger space. In 1998, Mick’s Plumbing & Heating moved from the family garage to its current location at 27 Howard Street in Thurmont, where it continues to operate today.
Over time, Late recognized a growing demand for commercial plumbing services and expanded the business beyond residential work, which his wife, Holly, said has been a big part of the company’s 35 years of success.
“It’s more than that,” Mickey said. “Fair prices and standing behind your work are the keys to success. If you don’t do those two things, you aren’t going to make it.”
The Lates are also quick to credit the employees, who have helped build the company over the past three and a half decades. Several team members have been with Mick’s Plumbing & Heating for more than 25 years—a reflection of the company’s commitment to treating its employees well.
Holly, has been with the company since 2005. “It is a really good balance—he focuses on the contracts, and I handle the financial side”
As Mick’s Plumbing & Heating celebrates its 35th anniversary, the Lates remain grateful to the customers and community that have supported them along the way.
“Thank you so much for 35 years of support and confidence,” Holly said. “We would not be where we are today without our customers and the community.”
Giving back has become an important part of the company’s mission, and the Lates explain that supporting the community that has supported them is one way they can show their appreciation. You will see them supporting sports organizations, schools, and more throughout the community.
