Maureen Flynn Aravanis

May 6, 1945 – August 2, 2025

Maureen Flynn Aravanis, 80, of Emmitsburg, MD, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 2, 2025, at Kline Hospice House, Mount Airy, MD, surrounded by loving family.

Born on May 6, 1945, in Washington, D.C., she was the daughter of the late Josephine A. (Garrity) and John F. Hartert.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Jacqueline Frew, and a brother-in-law, Dennis Frew.

Maureen graduated from Northwood High School in White Oak, MD, class of 1963.

In addition to being a homemaker and stay-at-home mom, Maureen had many career paths, which included being a Dental Assistant, Restaurant Owner/Manager, Home & Garden Decor Retailer, and Animal Care Technician with the Frederick County (MD) Humane Society.

She had a great passion and love for all animals, having owned and/or rescued opossums, raccoons, deer, skunks, squirrels, and the obligatory dogs, cats, horses, ponies, chickens, goats, and rabbits! She also enjoyed gardening, both in flowers and vegetables, interior decorating, and thrift shopping.

Maureen is survived by her son, Tony Aravanis, and wife, Norma Jean, of Hagerstown, MD; daughter, Katie Schwartz of Frederick, MD; and son, Nick Aravanis of Hagerstown, MD; grandchildren, Alicia Murphy (Ronnie), Jack Schwartz (Emma), Maureen Schwartz, Joey Schwartz, Jake Aravanis, and Luke Aravanis; three great-grandchildren; sisters, Suzanne Higgins, Alicia Senseman, and Jodi Seyfried; ex-husband Jerry Aravanis; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
