Harriet Chapel Welcomes New Priest

Starting in 2025, Rev. Marti Steiner Unger was called as Harriet Chapel’s new priest-in-charge. Rev. Marti received her BA in Education from Glenville State University and her theological certificate from Seminary of the Southwest through the Iona Collaborative. She previously served as a supply priest at Grace Episcopal Church in Middleway, West Virginia; St. Phillips Episcopal Church in Charles Town, West Virginia; and Mt. Zion Episcopal Church in Hedgesville, West Virginia.

Harriet Chapel holds an important place in the history of Thurmont and Catoctin Furnaces and is beloved by the community, but what drew Rev. Marti to Harriet Chapel is the gracious, welcoming parishioners reflecting the love of Jesus. The people of Harriet Chapel are well known for their outreach and care for each other, their history, and for the people in their community.

Rev. Marti is also a Recovery Coach Professional and is the current Executive Director of the 501(c)(3) non-profit Greater Recovery and Community Empowerment (GRaCE) that, in conjunction with WV Higher Education, trains Recovery/Life/Youth/Nurse Health Coaches and connects them through volunteerism. Rev. Marti is also an award-winning independent film director and author.

When Rev. Marti isn’t doing joint ministry with her husband, Rev. Dr. John R. Unger II, she is the caretaker of 80,000 honeybees and two onery dogs, Mikie and Grace.

Rev Marti encourages anyone who is seeking a place where you are welcomed as you are, a place where you can grow closer to God, to join the congregation at Harriet Chapel on Sundays at 9:00 a.m. View the advertisement on page 3 for more information.
