Emmitsburg Food Bank Transitions to New Leadership

For more than 30 years, Phyllis Kelly has been a familiar face at the Emmitsburg Food Bank. After decades of serving the community, Kelly recently decided it was time to step down from managing the food bank and pass the reins to someone younger.

Two years ago, Kelly found that person: Sarah Jacobson.

The two have spent the past two years training together, and Jacobson has now officially taken over the day-to-day operations.

Jacobson has volunteered at the food bank for the past 10 years, and she says Kelly has been an inspiration to her. “Phyllis demonstrates that one person truly can make a difference in the lives of those in need,” Jacobson said.

The Emmitsburg Food Bank serves approximately 75 families each month. Families can visit twice a month to receive resources, and they simply need to provide identification and proof of residence.

As Jacobson takes on her new role, she understands the challenges that come with keeping the food bank running. In addition to securing enough food to serve the community each month, the organization must also cover the building’s rent, heating, and electricity costs. She also encourages people to consider volunteering—just one or two hours a month can make a difference.

There are also plans to expand the Emmitsburg Food Bank’s current space. Jacobson said the additional room will allow the organization to store more food and take advantage of bulk purchasing opportunities. An additional freezer is also planned as part of the expansion. One of the biggest needs currently is laundry detergent.

While Kelly may no longer be managing the Emmitsburg Food Bank, she plans to continue volunteering.

“I have loved every minute of it,” Kelly expressed. “I have become friends with many of the clients and look forward to seeing them each week.”

The Emmitsburg Food Bank is open Monday and Wednesday, from 7:00 to 8 p.m., and Friday and Saturday, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Donations can also be dropped off during these times. Phyllis Kelly passes the keys to the new manager of the Emmitsburg Food Bank, Sarah Jacobson.
