Emmitsburg 50+ Center
By Caitlyn Kirby & Courtney Alcon
We’re welcoming fall at the Emmitsburg 50+ Community Center with our newest team member, Center Assistant Courtney Alcon. Come say hello, enjoy a fresh cup of coffee, and get to know us! Stop in between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. for a game, check out an art or fitness class, and spend time visiting with friends and neighbors over lunch.
Our Lunch Bunch gathers every Monday at noon. We’re looking forward to savory fall favorites, including hearty soups, fresh salads, and comforting chicken piccata. Seniors under 60 pay just $6.06 for lunch, and voluntary contributions are welcome for participants over 60. Reservations are open until the Wednesday prior to each meal, so claim your spot by calling or signing up on your next visit! On Monday, September 28, before Lunch at 11:00 a.m., our Long-Term Care Ombudsman will be here to present about scams and fraud awareness. Drop in to see the presentation and reserve a lunch for afterward!
If you’ve got a green thumb (or wish you did), join us on September 8 for Native Gardens and Prepping for Winter, presented by UMD Extension. Learn why “leaving the leaves” and resisting the urge to over-clean your landscape can provide critical habitat and food sources for birds, pollinators, beneficial insects, and other wildlife.
For arts and crafts opportunities this month, the Emmitsburg Library will once again join us on September 23 for a free dried-flower ornament craft. Our art teacher, Dorothea Barrick, will also be back on September 15 for a Sunflower Field painting class ($15.00). No matter how crafty you are, everyone always enjoys the camaraderie and creativity in our classes!
On Friday, September 25, we’re off to the Circus! Join us for a vaudeville-style show and hands-on learning from circus group Theatricks. Tickets are $15.00, and transportation may be available from Transit-Plus with a two-week advance notice. There’s still time to sign up! Call us or stop by to register.
Keep an eye out for the Fall Program Guide, which will be available on our website in early September. Remember, registration day for fall programs and classes will be on Friday, September 11, at 9:00 a.m.
You can find more information about all our programs on our website at frederickcountymd.gov/virtual50 or give us a call at 301-600-6350. We hope to see you soon!
