Emmitsburg 50+ Center

BY Caitlyn Kirby

Summer programs continue this August at the Emmitsburg 50+ Community Center! Starting out the month on August 5 is the Driver Safety Course offered by AARP. This is a classroom-learning experience designed to refresh your knowledge of the rules of the road and how to make driving adjustments due to age-related changes. The class is 9:45 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and costs $20.00 for AARP members and $25.00 for non-members. Also, check with your car insurance company to see if they offer a discount for completing the class. Pre-registration is required by calling or emailing the senior center by Monday, August 3.

We also have some arts and crafts upcoming! We will have a two-week mosaic course on August 12 and 19 to learn how to design, tile, and grout a mosaic tray ($10.00).

On Tuesday, August 25, our art instructor, Dorothea Barrick, will be back to teach a collage class for $15.00 (all materials provided). Then, on August 26, Emmitsburg Library will join us to instruct a free craft, beaded plant stakes to add some bling to your garden.

August also brings many opportunities for socializing! Every Monday, we have the weekly Lunch Bunch, a time to enjoy a nutritious meal with friends. Just contact the center to sign up by Wednesday for the following Monday. This month’s special meal is the Luau Lunch Bunch on Thursday, August 13. Sign up at least one week in advance for this tropical treat. Every Wednesday at 10:00 a.m., we have coffee and conversation time, where you can drop in for a hot beverage and chit-chat. We also have space to play games; if you have a group who would like to play or teach a new game, let me know!

Fitness also continues all summer long. Mondays at 1:00 p.m. is Chair Yoga with instructor Christina Green. This class uses standing and seated movements that are adaptable. You are invited to try out your first class for free, then drop in for $4.00 per class. See what our class is raving about! We continue to have open gym on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays at 10:00 a.m. UnRulies Pickleball for fun and exercise is on Wednesdays at 1:00 p.m. and select Fridays at 1:00 p.m. Please call the center if you are interested in playing on Fridays, so we can see if there are enough players. Free exercise to video continues Monday through Thursday at 9:15 a.m.
