Emmitsburg 50+ Center

BY Caitlyn Kirby

Happy July! With the weather heating up, it is a great time to visit the Emmitsburg 50+ Center to cool off with an activity. Every Monday, we have lunch bunch offered at noon. Just reserve your meal by Wednesday, or bring your own lunch. Arrive at 11:00 a.m. on Mondays to play a round or two of word games like Scrabble before lunch. Also, every Wednesday morning at 10:00 a.m., join us for coffee and chit-chat, a time to just talk and play a game if you would like!

We are also looking forward to our special event this summer: the Line Dance Hoedown! On Friday, July 31, we’ll enjoy a catered BBQ luncheon, followed by line dance beginner lessons in the gym with FIBE Dance company. Join us for great food, friends, dancing, and music. Dances can be modified for all abilities. The cost is $15.00, and may be paid online or in person at the center. Register by July 22.

On Thursdays starting July 9, join us for crafternoon at noon. You can bring your own lunch and project to work on, or I can teach you how to make a simple coiled basket just by wrapping yarn around cord—no sewing required. We are also starting Movie Tuesday on July 14 at 11:00 a.m., when we will watch Tom Hanks in The ‘Burbs. Suggestions for next month’s movie are welcome.

For arts and crafts this month, Dorothea returns to teach Beach Shells in Watercolor on July 21 ($15.00). We also have a free ribbon wreath craft with the Library on July 22 for Holly Jolly July! Please contact the center to reserve a seat for these programs.

Educational opportunities this month include a New to Medicare Workshop on Thursday, July 23, from 10:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. This is a free workshop that covers Navigating the Medicare Maze and Medigap/Supplemental Insurance vs. Medicare Advantage plans. Registration is required for this workshop. Call 301-600-1234 to register. Joining us on July 27 is Estelle Dupree, LCPC, for an informative talk at 11:00 a.m. on Anxiety & Older Adults. This is a great opportunity to learn more about the research, as well as different techniques to manage anxiety for you and your loved ones.

Exercise programs also continue this month, with UnRulies Pickleball on Wednesdays at 1:00 p.m. The UnRulies play for fun and exercise. Exercise to video is offered daily at 9:15 a.m., and chair yoga to video is on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 12:30 p.m. Open Gym is available for shooting hoops, walking, cornhole, etc. on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays, from 10:00 a.m. to noon. We also invite you to Chair Yoga with Christina on Mondays at 1:00 p.m. Try out your first class free, then drop in for $4.00 per class.
