Emmitsburg 50+ Center

BY Caitlyn Kirby

December is the time of the year for making new memories, spending time with friends and family, and getting ready for the holiday season. We have a number of activities this month to get you in the winter mood! If you need an idea for a holiday appetizer, we will have a cooking demo for you to follow along to make strawberry bruschetta ($6.00) on December 3. On Wednesday, December 10, we will be taking a ride to the Valley Mall in Hagerstown to do some holiday shopping ($15.00). We also have Dollar Craft Day on December 16 at 11:00 a.m., and our craft class of the month is paper quilled snowflakes on December 17 ($5.00), which makes a lovely ornament!

For education this month, on December 1, the sustainability nonprofit, Mobilize Frederick, will join us before lunch at 11:00 to tell us about our local watershed, using their interactive model. During lunch that day at 12:30 p.m., a librarian will be down in the center to tell us what’s going on in the library this month, along with some book selections for you to check out!

Ongoing in December is the Monday Lunch Bunch! Every Monday at noon (except for December 22), we all get together to enjoy a nutritious meal and good company. We also have a bonus holiday lunch this month on December 17, and a “Noon’s Eve” lunch on December 30. Sign up for Mondays three days in advance, and for the bonus meals one week in advance. We hope to see you there!

Also, we want to hear from you. In order to better serve our community, we would like to offer Lunch Bunch on another day (or days). Which days would be the best for you? Send us an email or give us a call to let us know. These are the guidelines: Individuals age 60+, as well as the spouse or dependent disabled adult child of a qualified individual, are eligible to participate. No senior is denied a meal due to inability to contribute. Individuals under the age of 60 may reserve a meal and pay the full cost of $6.06.

Ongoing programs include daily exercise to video, Monday through Thursday at 9:15 a.m. Benefits of exercise include improved bone and muscle strength, a lower risk of falls, and better management of chronic conditions. Also continuing this month is Chair Yoga with Christina on Monday at 1:00 p.m. Try out your first class for free; we think you’ll love it! Unrulies Pickleball continues on Wednesdays and Fridays at 1:00 p.m. We’ll also be adding intermediate pickleball to the calendar on Tuesdays at 10:00 a.m. and Thursdays at noon.

We want to express our gratitude to all our participants this year. You make the senior center a great place to visit! We hope that if you haven’t come by yet, you’ll visit the center in 2026. We wish you a safe and joyful holiday season!
