Emmitsburg 50+ Center
BY Caitlyn Kirby
As the leaves turn and a crispness fills the air, the Emmitsburg Senior Center is welcoming the season with a full harvest of activities, puzzles, and natural wonders to celebrate October. Whether you’re a fan of fitness, arts & crafts, games, or just looking for good company and great events, there’s something this month to make you smile, think, and connect.
To begin the month, we are working with the wonderful Emmitsburg Branch Library for a Craft Swap on Saturday, October 4. Bring in your gently used craft supplies to the Senior Center or Library the week of, and we’ll sort them out. On the day of the swap, you can “shop” to refresh your stash! Open to all; no donation necessary. Another Library collaboration is a walking group, which will meet this month on October 8 at the Senior Center. Led by a librarian, take a walk around town, talk about books and shows, and learn about a local business.
Returning to our fitness lineup is Chair Yoga on Mondays at 1:00 p.m. Chair yoga is a gentle, therapeutic, and inclusive variation of yoga. Poses are done while seated or with the help of a chair. It is often recommended for those who find traditional yoga challenging. Try out your first class for free to see if it’s for you! We still have daily exercise to video at 9:15 a.m. UnRulies Pickleball continues on Wednesday and Friday.
For the crafty folks out there, our art class of the month is Watercolor Crayon Resist with Dorothea on Tuesday, October 14. On October 15, we’ll host a craft to make candy corn pinecone decor. On October 21, dollar craft day continues to make a simple craft while chatting with friends. We’ll also learn to make a junk journal on October 28, a fun and creative way to store your keepsakes and memories. Love bread? On October 8, try out making bread in a bag! You will be able to follow along and make your own loaf.
Every Monday at noon, join us for Lunch Bunch. This is a great way to meet new people and enjoy a nutritious meal. Some weeks, we have guest speakers. On October 20, the MD Office of Attorney General will join us for a presentation on Fraud and Scam Awareness. Register by Wednesday each week for a meal, or you may drop in if you bring your own lunch.
You can find our monthly and quarterly calendars online at www.frederickcountymd.gov/Virtual50, and we’re always happy to answer any questions by phone, email, or in person—just drop by! We also welcome your suggestions, because we’re here to serve you and make the Emmitsburg 50+ Center a place where everyone feels at home. Find us at 300 S. Seton Avenue in Emmitsburg, on the lower level.
