Emmitsburg 50+ Center
BY Caitlyn Kirby
We have a great August lineup for you at the Emmitsburg 50+ Community Center! There is something for everyone, from fitness to crafts to education and more. We’d also love to see you here at lunch at noon on Mondays. Chat with others in a relaxing setting and enjoy a healthy meal.
For the crafty folks, we’ll start the month on August 3 by making a succulent container garden ($15.00). Later in the month, we will be making coasters out of resin ($5.00) on August 20.
There are also many opportunities to learn something new this month. On August 6, we will have a representative from the Division of Waste and Recycling give a talk, Composting 101, about how to make at-home composting work for YOU! We will hold an Introduction to Sign Language class on August 12, the ABC’s and 1,2,3s of ASL ($10.00). Taught by Martha Pugh, who has over 20 years of teaching and interpreting ASL, learn how to fingerspell, count, introduce yourself, and get an overview of deaf culture and history. Then, on August 20, Maryland Legal Aid will be back all morning for walk-in intakes on a variety of legal issues.
Need a new recipe to try? Join us on August 13, when Senior Center Assistant Lori will lead a demo for summer rolls with peanut sauce, a fresh, vegetarian summer treat. Participants will also receive the ingredients to follow along and make their own ($5.00).
Fitness programs also continuing this summer include the free daily exercise video at 9:15 a.m. and Unrulies Pickleball on Wednesdays and Fridays at 1:00 p.m. We also have chair yoga with Christina on Mondays at 1:00; try your first class for free. Following the free first class, drop in for just $4.00 per class. New for this summer is intermediate pickleball on Thursdays at 2:00 p.m. This will be a group that plays by the rules, the best they can! If you are interested in this group, please call the center so that we can coordinate a Thursday that works for everyone to play.
We’re excited to be bringing a new fitness class to the Emmitsburg 50+ Center this fall. We’re looking for your thoughts on what kind of class you would want to take. This class would take place on Wednesdays at 5:30 p.m. What type of exercise do you want to see: General exercise (with a seated modification), strength training, stretching, cardio, or something else? Send us a message at EmmitsburgSeniorCenter@frederickcountymd.gov and let us know your requests.
To pre-register for any of these programs, please contact the Center at 301-600-6350 or EmmitsburgSeniorCenter@frederickcountymd.gov. For a copy of the calendar, stop by the senior center located at 300 S. Seton (lower level) or visit our website at www.frederickcountymd.gov/virtual50.
