Emmitsburg 50+ Center
BY Caitlyn Kirby
Last month, the Emmitsburg 50+ Center (a.k.a Senior Center) had many exciting and engaging programs! The highlight of the month was definitely the Valentine’s Day Lunch, featuring Elvis Tribute Artist Taylor Brown. Everyone enjoyed singing and dancing along to the classic hits of Elvis. We also enjoyed a history presentation by The Catoctin Banner contributor and author, James Rada, Jr., about the 50th Anniversary Reunion of the Battle of Gettysburg. We also got some practical information from Maryland Legal Aid about renter’s rights and advance directives, as well as some heart-healthy education from Frederick Health Hospital!
Coming up in March, we’ll start with a mental health education and discussion on March 3 with Estelle Dupree, a therapist with Frederick County Health Department. Break the mental health stigma by connecting with others and coming away with some tips that can help you or a loved one deal with loneliness.
If you are looking for something creative, our craft for the month is Sharpie mug art on March 20. Our art class taught by Dorothea will be Asian Art Brushwork: Blossoms on March 24. Also, every Wednesday at 12:30 p.m., bring your lunch and your current craft project to work on for “Crafternoon.”
We have Lunch Bunch every Monday. Enjoy a nutritious meal while connecting with friends. We also host a monthly birthday party on the last Monday of the month, where we enjoy dessert after lunch and celebrate. To reserve a lunch, please contact the center by Wednesday for the following week. Once a month, we also meet at a local restaurant for lunch, which will be on March 26. Contact the center for more information and to register.
Don’t forget about our ongoing fitness programs: exercise to video daily at 9:15 a.m., enjoy Unrulies Pickleball on Wednesdays and Fridays at 1:00 p.m., and Chair Yoga with Christina on Mondays at 1:00 p.m. Try your first class for free, and you can drop in for a class for $4.00.
For a copy of the calendar, stop by the Emmitsburg 50+ Center, located at 300 S. Seton Avenue (lower level), or visit our website at frederickcountymd.gov/virtual50. We would love to see you at one of our upcoming programs. Look for the Spring Activity Guide at the beginning of March, which will also be posted on our website.
