Community Veteran Event Board

American Legion Post 168, Thurmont

On January 12, 2025, we had our first Junior Auxiliary members gathering in a very long time. The Auxiliary and the Juniors worked together to make “No Sew/Knotted” blankets for two very good causes. One, a homeless shelter based in Frederick County that right now is a home to six young men. We learned more about this shelter at our meeting on January 20 and can’t wait to share and do more. The second cause is called “Sleep In Heavenly Peace.” There are 350 chapters in  the United States, Canada, Bermuda, and the Bahamas…and growing! There is a chapter in Frederick County. What they are known for is building beds for children who do not have one (that’s one thing I have never even thought about. Have you?). Follow them on Facebook: Sleep in Heavenly Peace or the Frederick County chapter, specifically Sleep in Heavenly Peace – MD, Frederick Co. Don’t have Facebook? Look them up on the website shpbeds.org.

Valentine’s Day is right around the corner. While you acknowledge family and loved ones in your life, don’t forget to spread some love to our active military and Veterans. There are many ways to do this, including taking a meal to them, giving them a gift card for coffee or dinner, or just visiting with them, especially if they live alone.

Candy Bingo is back, and we had our first night in January. The next one is February 15 at 7:00 p.m. in the dining room area in the lower level of the Legion. These Bingos help the Legion fund the Easter Egg Hunt for the community.

Just a reminder to pay your dues. The membership picnic will be here before you know it, and you will need to show your 2025 membership card to be able to attend.
