Community Comes Together for Seton Center 5K at Mount St. Mary’s
It was the kind of crisp, sunny spring morning that practically begs for a run through the mountains. And that’s exactly what more than 90 participants did on March 29, as they laced up their sneakers for the 2nd Annual Seton Center 5K Run/Walk at Mount St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg.
Hosted by the university’s Center for Service, the event brought together runners and walkers ranging in age from 18 to 71—all with a common goal: to support Seton Center’s vital outreach programs. By the end of the day, $2,733 had been raised to help fund services such as food assistance, rental support, and help with utility bills for local families in need.
“The Seton Center 5K was a success on various levels,” said David McCarthy, PhD, president of the Seton Center Board of Directors and Professor of Theology at the Mount. “It was an enjoyable day with friends and family. We raised money for the Seton Center and got the word out about what the Seton Center does in the community. We hosted whole families from Emmitsburg, Thurmont, Virginia, and Pennsylvania, with the kids running ahead, some parents keeping pace, and others taking their time.”
The event drew a wide range of participants, from casual walkers to competitive runners. Greenan Sullivan of the Mount’s seminary posted the fastest time overall, crossing the finish line in just 20 minutes and 56 seconds. Jennifer Clements, principal of Catoctin High School, was the top female finisher, with a time of 27 minutes and 33 seconds.
The day wouldn’t have been possible without the support of volunteers and local businesses. Students from the Mount’s Center for Service and members of the Mount Women’s Soccer Team helped coordinate the race, while sponsors such as Jubilee, Ace Hardware, and Weis provided refreshments and support.
“For our volunteers, it did not seem like work, especially for the Mount students from the Center for Service and the Mount Women’s soccer team,” Dr. McCarthy added. “Participants and volunteers are already looking forward to the 3rd annual next year!”
