Bugs, Bees, and a Greener Thurmont

Every April, Earth Day inspires millions to raise awareness about environmental issues and take meaningful action to protect our planet. This year, the Thurmont Regional Library teamed up with the Thurmont Green Team to host the annual Thurmont Green Fest, celebrating the theme “Wings of Change: Birds, Butterflies, and Bees.”

Fox Haven Farm and Retreat Center, the Catoctin Forest Alliance, Frederick County Master Gardeners, Mobilize Frederick, and the Frederick County Forestry Board were just a few of the local and state organizations who were on hand to share resources and provide demonstrations about environmental-friendly practices and programs. The Frederick County Forestry Board was even handing out free trees/shrubs to attendees.

A highlight of the day was a lively presentation by Ryan “The Bug Man” Bridge, who captivated a room full of curious kids with his fascinating insect collection. He explained the vital role bugs play in supporting healthy ecosystems.

In addition to “The Bug Man,” the library staff hosted craft sessions for children throughout the day, including fun activities like making paper bees.

The Thurmont Green Team is a dedicated group of volunteers committed to helping residents adopt sustainable practices in their daily lives. To learn more about their initiatives or to get involved, visit thurmont.com or email ThurmontGreen@Gmail.com.
