American Legion Post 168, Thurmont

What an awesome time the children and their families had at our Annual Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, April 12. We didn’t let the dreary day dampen our spirits. The children were treated with a visit from the Easter Bunny, a basket of eggs with candy, and tickets that they could use at the prize table.

I would be amiss if I didn’t include that the month of April was dedicated to our military children. Military children face unique challenges and make sacrifices more than just the month of April. To recognize this, April was designated as the Month of the Military Child (#MOMC). The American Legion appreciates and celebrates these children who give up so much as their servicemember parents work to protect and defend America, its people, and its principles. So, whether it is April or December, let’s always remember the military children.

The red poppy is a nationally recognized symbol of sacrifice worn by Americans since World War I to honor those who served and died for our country in all wars. It reminds Americans of the sacrifices made by our Veterans while protecting our freedoms. Unfortunately, there are a lot of people in the United States who do not know the meaning of the poppy. It is up to us to spread the word. During the month of May, poppies will be available at various businesses throughout Thurmont. If you see a basket of poppies at a business, please feel free to take a poppy to wear on Friday, May 23, to honor the fallen and support the living who have worn our nation’s uniform. You can always pick one up at the Legion.

Day For God and Country is Sunday, June 8, at Camp West Mar. The Legion founders, including four chaplains, established “For God and Country” as a core principle, emphasizing the connection between faith and service to the nation.

Congratulations to all the 2025 Graduates! Best wishes to you in your future endeavors. We hope that you were able to take advantage of the Scholarships available through the Legion, SAL, and the Auxiliary.

There are some events that you will want to mark your calendar for: Artisan Markets are held monthly in the upstairs Banquet Hall, featuring lots of vendors with unique items. The SAL Car Show is Saturday, June 14, and the Legion Golf Tournament is Friday, June 20.

Of course, follow us on Facebook (The American Legion Post 168) to get up-to-date information on what’s happening at the Legion because there are lots of things going on for the Veterans and the community.
