American Legion Post 168, Thurmont

March came in like a lion, and the lion pretty much stayed all month. That wind has been something fierce! Hopefully, April will bring calm, warm weather and lots of beauty. I don’t know about you, but I am ready for some fun outside activities. The youth will be playing spring sports, so be sure to support them, as they are the future. Remember to check in on the elderly and Veterans; they may need some yard assistance or just some good old-fashioned camaraderie since it has been a long winter.

At their meeting on March 17, the Auxiliary presented blankets to Cindy Morgan, executive director of Steadfast, Standing Firm Against Youth Homelessness. Steadfast is a nonprofit that opened in June 2023. At present, they house five youths between the ages of 16 and 21. They are given life-skills training and relationship building, and, if they attend school, they have tutors. They have ongoing needs of food (canned goods), toiletries, paper towels, toilet paper, dish soap, and laundry detergent. For more information on Steadfast and ways you can help, visit www.steadfastmd.org or join them on Facebook: Steadfast, Standing Firm Against Youth Homelessness.

The Auxiliary is collecting travel-size hygiene items for Veterans at the Martinsburg VA Center. There is a donation bin in the Legion lobby. The items needed are shampoo, lotion, deodorant, powder, tissues (pocket-size), toothpaste, combs/brushes, toothbrushes, and crew socks. Thank you in advance for your donations.

There are some great upcoming events that you will want to save the date in your calendars! Artisan Markets are held monthly in the upstairs banquet hall, featuring lots of vendors with unique items. The SAL Car Show is on Saturday, June 14, and the Legion Golf Tournament is on Friday, June 20.

You can follow us on Facebook (The American Legion Post 168) to get up-to-date information on what’s happening at the Legion because there are lots of things going on for the Veterans and the community.
