American Legion Post 168, Thurmont

Wow, what a great Breakfast with Santa event!  Lots of children—young and not so young—were able to enjoy a nice buffet of food, crafting, and, of course, visiting with Santa and one of his very helpful elves! We would like to thank all the patrons and volunteers who helped make this a very successful event again this year! Be sure to follow us on Facebook so that you can join us again next year.

Another successful event we held was the Giving Tree. Hopefully, the families that we supported will have a joyous holiday.

We hope that everyone had a very Merry Christmas and a safe and happy New Year. We have a few items that we would like to bring to your attention.

Candy Bingo will make a return on January 18, so mark your calendars now to come out for a night of fun with your children and grandchildren!

The Pop-Up Shops were such a hit, that the SAL will be supporting this again starting in January. We even had two patrons stop by on the 14th because they thought the Pop-Up Shops were being held! They are becoming very popular.

If you didn’t pay your Membership dues by December 31, 2024, your key card has been deactivated. Please stop by or mail your dues to the Legion as soon as possible. Any questions, please contact the Post at 301-271-4411 or by emailing [email protected] or [email protected].

Do you have seniors in high school? The Legion hands out scholarships to those students who want to further their education. Please have your student log into their Naviance account at https://student.naviance.com/catoctin or stop by the Guidance office and pick up an application.

Boys State (Legion) and Girls State (Auxiliary) are the most respected and selective educational programs of government instruction for U.S. high school students. Each year, the Legion sends interested students to this one-week program. To learn more, please check out the website at app.campdoc.com/register/mbsmgs/mgsparticipant. We would love to be able to sponsor your student.

Americanism Essay Contest is in full swing. The contest is open for public and homeschooled students in grades third through eighth. The theme for this year is “What Does American the Beautiful mean to me (regarding Veterans and our military)?”

All essays will be picked up from the schools on January 31, 2025. If the essay is written by homeschooled children, please drop them off at the Legion on January 31 (we open at noon). We look forward to reading all the essays.

Do you have an artist in the family? Have them enter the Poppy Poster Contest. For more information on this, please send an email to [email protected], and the rules can be sent to you.

Don’t forget to follow us on Facebook to keep up with weekly happenings:   kitchen specials, yoga, Queen of Hearts, Corn Hole Tournament, Bingo, Line Dancing, and Meat Pack Raffles.
