A Celebration of Community, Service, Education

Ruth Heaney

The Thurmont Lions Club proudly hosted its annual “Education/Community Night” on May 14. This special evening is when organizations receive funds to further their goals, all of which have something in common: making our community a better place.

The celebration is also the culmination of the Lions Club projects, including the famous Sandwich Sales, marketing delicious homemade chocolate bars, the Christmas Extravaganza, and the soup sales.

It is with great Lions Club pride that the following institutions and organizations received funds:

Four aspiring and determined CHS students, launching their careers in agriculture and medicine through college.

Two selfless students who spread positivity through their community service.

Eight outstanding schools in Sabillasville, Emmitsburg, Lewistown, and Thurmont.

Eight Lion organizations, including Leo Clubs, District 22W programs such as Diabetes Awareness and hearing camperships, Lions Saving Kids Sight Foundation, and Lions Vision Research Foundations

Eighteen community organizations: Catoctin Furnace Historical Society, Catoctin FFA, Children of Incarcerated Parents, Cuddles Cat Rescue, Frederick County 4H Therapeutic Riding Program, Guardian Hose Company, Hospice of Frederick County, Make a Difference in Thurmont Fund, Main Street Thurmont, Seton Center, Sleep in Heavenly Peace, Thurmont Addiction Committee, Thurmont Ambulance Company, Thurmont Food Bank, Thurmont Historical Society, Thurmont Parks & Recreation Committee, Thurmont Regional Library, and Thurmont Senior Center, Inc.

Three Veteran presentations to Hero Dog, Inc., which raises and trains service dogs; Maryland Patriot Guard, which supports families and Veterans; and Operation Second Chance, supporting immediate needs and interests of our Veterans and their families.

Two cancer-related causes: Providing gas cards for parents to get to and from Johns Hopkins Pediatric Cancer Center, where their child is being treated; and the Patty Hurwitz Breast Fund, providing early detection/treatment of breast cancer.

Take a look at all the pictures. You probably recognize more than one person. The Thurmont Lions Club motto is “We Serve.” To be part of the Lions Club does not require a set amount of time; helping when possible is up to you. Please think about talking to a Lion and being part of the celebration of community, service, and education. Go to www.thurmontlionsclub.com, click “Get Involved,” then click “Volunteer” and then “Contact a Lion.”
As Helen Keller said, “Alone, we can do so little; Together, we can do so much.”
