La Antorcha de la Independencia (The Independence Torch)
Every year on July Fourth, you celebrate with your family and friends with barbecues, glow sticks, pools, fireworks, and more food—or however you and your family celebrate our day of freedom. Every year in Guatemala, people celebrate Guatemala’s Independence Day on September 15. We celebrate our Independence Day with fireworks and food, but Guatemala celebrates its Independence Day in a different way. The people of Guatemala run through their streets carrying REAL LIT TORCHES!
Seems like a fire hazard to me, but what’s even crazier is that students, families, and communities take part in this tradition. Yes, real torches with fire coming out of the top! What a cool tradition!
Sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grade students at Mother Seton School (MSS) got to experience our own little torch run. Our amazing Spanish teacher, Mrs. Thomas, gave us torches, and I know what you’re thinking: REAL torches? No! Mrs. Thomas brought in inflatable torches, and each class split into two groups. We ran to the sidewalk and back and handed the torch off to our teammate. It’s a day I don’t think any of us will forget!
You guys think that’s fun? This month is Hispanic Heritage Month! Celebrate with your own families or do some research, because there are a lot more super cool and fun things that Hispanic countries celebrate.
