Fall Programs and Events at Fort Ritchie Community Center

Programs for people of all ages and abilities highlight the fall schedule at the Fort Ritchie Community Center (FRCC). While it was sad to close out the summer camp program, it is equally exciting to introduce new opportunities and continue successful programs such as Kids Club and Homeschool Club. The FRCC will also host several special events and activities for the community to enjoy this fall.

The Walking Club will meet at the community center on Saturday mornings beginning September 19. This free program is open to everyone, including friendly furry companions. Dogs must be kept on a leash, and owners are asked to clean up after their pets. Walks will take place throughout the former Fort Ritchie property, offering beautiful views of the lakes and mountains, as well as opportunities to see the many changes taking place across the property.

Kids Club and Homeschool Club are social recreation programs that emphasize fun through group games, arts activities, guest speakers, and LEGO® Robotics. The programs are designed for children ages 6 to 13. Kids Club meets on Tuesdays at 6:00 p.m. Homeschool Club offers similar programming and meets on Wednesdays at 10:00 a.m. Both programs last approximately 90 minutes and have a participation fee of $5.00 per session. Scholarships are available for families in need.

The FRCC also offers group fitness classes and personal-training sessions. A wide variety of classes are available, including Yoga, Barre, Zumba, RIP, and more. New to the fall fitness schedule is a free Tai Chi class. The introductory session will be held on Wednesday, September 23, at 6:00 p.m., to gauge community interest. Partnerships with the Philanthropic Education Organization (P.E.O.) and the Washington County Community Foundation have made this opportunity possible. For the complete fitness schedule and preregistration information, visit www.thefrcc.org.

Upcoming special events are: October 9 – Sporting Clays Tournament; October 14 – Red Cross Blood Drive; October 17 – Fall Craft Bazaar; October 31 – Trunk or Treat; November 7 – Fall Indoor Yard Sale; December 12 – Holiday Craft Bazaar; December 19 – Breakfast with Santa; and December 23 – Red Cross Blood Drive.

Three new programs have been added to the fall calendar to focus on health, nutrition, and wellness:                 September 25 – Taming the Taboo Around Pelvic Floor Health;              October 2 – The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of Nutrition; and October 9 – Heart Health and Nutrition. Each session will begin at 6:00 p.m. and include light refreshments.

The FRCC food pantry is expanding its operating hours to better serve the community. The food pantry will now be open on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month, as well as on Saturday mornings. Because of partnership requirements associated with the program, participants must reside in Maryland. The Fort Ritchie Community Center features a fitness center, weight room, basketball court, and meeting rooms.
