Community Center Hosts Teen Summit
Exploring potential career opportunities through in-person engagement was the focus of the Fort Ritchie Community Center’s Teen Summit. More than 60 teens participated in the event, which featured a keynote speaker, a catered lunch, door prizes, and representatives from 35 different career fields.
Participants heard from keynote speaker Jeremiah Reynolds, who shared how a series of poor decisions led to his incarceration at the age of 17. After spending 20 years in prison, Reynolds spoke candidly about how even seemingly small choices can have long-term consequences. He encouraged teens to stay active in their communities, be mindful of how they spend their time, and carefully consider the company they keep. Reynolds also shared his personal turnaround story, noting that he is now married with two children and employed by a Fortune 500 company.
Representatives from a wide range of industries—including healthcare, the military, law enforcement, manufacturing, and real estate—were on hand to connect with students. Local and regional vocational schools, colleges, and universities also participated.
J.D. Harman, owner of Harman Automotive, offered a hands-on learning experience by teaching basic automobile maintenance in his shop located on the Fort Ritchie property. This interactive component gave teens the opportunity to change tires on a vehicle and learn other important lessons related to car maintenance and safety.
The Teen Summit marked the culmination of a youth program sponsored by the Rural Maryland Council, which began in September 2025. Throughout the program, local teens met weekly to explore topics such as communication strategies, meal preparation, job application skills, and career exploration. The summit was planned by teen program participants and community center staff.
