A Change of Scenery

by Jeff Yocum

“A Change of Scenery” focuses on day trips from Thurmont that are within 150 miles (give or take). These trips will not include “Disney-level” destinations, but rather, lesser-known points of interest. The purpose of the article is to suggest venues for folks seeking a short, easily accessible change of scenery. In the process, hopefully something will be learned. Some will be historic, some cultural, and others just plain quirky. I confess an ulterior motive for writing this article:

I have a wanderlust addiction.

Hidden Gem

Have you ever known someone who was always the envy of everyone? They always knew where to get the best deals or knew the paths of least resistance in obtaining an objective or achieving a goal. Envy from afar no longer. You can be that person. And the secret is found in the least likely of places: the Frederick County Public Library (FCPL).

The services and benefits go well beyond books. Whether you’re a grade school, high school, or college student, whether you’re a young professional or a retiree, the FCPL has something for you that will help you reach whatever goal you are stretching for.

Need to strengthen your computer skills to better perform your job? Digital Resources can help find the training materials and programs to make that happen. Want to take that new skill out into the job market and find a better job? Try JobNow to write a better resume and snag that next job. If you need some guidance along the way, ask the library staff to point you in the right direction. The opportunities to tailor the learning programs to your specific needs are nearly endless.

Perhaps you’re a parent of two preschoolers who have been cooped up inside because of foul weather. Look into the many programs designed to engage preschoolers’ minds and guide them into a lifetime of loving to learn. You can follow the programs into advanced age groups as your child grows as well.

Are you at the point where you want to take your education to a higher plain? Check out the assistance available for prepping for entrance exams. Peterson’s Test and Career Prep aids are available for a myriad of tests like GED, SAT, GRE, LSAT, MCAT, and much more. All that’s required to unlock the door is a library card.

Coming in March, the Thurmont Library will host Frederick County Children and family Services. It will be easier for families of all ages in need of working with the various social services by not having to travel to Frederick. Easing the burden of navigating through the social services systems will improve the lives of many.

Of course, if all you’re looking for is a quiet place of respite for a cold, rainy day of reading for pleasure, the libraries offer a number of nooks and crannies for that simple pleasure.
