Emmitsburg 50+ Center
BY Caitlyn Kirby

We invite you to visit the Emmitsburg 50+ Center this month! There is something for everyone to try.
For arts and crafts this month, Dorothea Barrick is teaching a wildlife drawing class on February 10, where we will use drawing pencils on toned paper for a different effect. On February 11, our craft is a wintry tea cup scene. Then, on February 12, our SHIP (State Health Insurance Assistance Program) staff will be teaching a free workshop about Navigating the Medicare Maze and Medigap/Supplemental Insurance vs. Medicare Advantages. If you are going to enroll in Medicare soon, this is a great way to learn! Please call 301-600-1234 to register. We’ll also be hosting a mental health education presentation by Estelle Dupree, LCPC, on Monday, February 9, at 11:00 a.m., with the topic of Self-Care and Suicide Prevention. She will discuss barriers to treating mental health in older adults, how increased awareness can lead to better-informed decisions, and highlight protective factors. You can also register to watch on Zoom from home. Valentine’s Day is coming up! We will be hosting a Valentine’s Tea Tasting at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 13, followed by Lunch Bunch at noon! Please register by February 5 for these programs.
Maryland Legal Aid will also visit us this month on Wednesday, February 18, to help you complete an intake form if you are in need of their services. Also on that day is our cooking demo of vegetarian stuffed peppers, which you will be able to make and sample yourself!
By the time this article is published, there will be a follow-up survey available from the Senior Center Feasibility Study Focus Groups in January. We invite you to complete a survey either online at FrederickCountyMD.gov/DAI or on paper at the center. Responses from the surveys will help ensure our county senior centers meet the changing needs of older adults in the future. The study will also explore potential locations for new centers and new programs to offer. Adults of all ages are welcome to complete the survey.
For fitness, Chair Yoga on Mondays at 1:00 p.m. with Christina continues! Try your first class for free, then drop in for just $4.00 a class. Unrulies Pickleball continues on Wednesdays and Fridays at 1:00 p.m. Intermediate pickleball is on Tuesdays at 10:00 a.m. and Thursdays at noon. Lunch bunch also continues weekly on Mondays at noon. Please call and reserve your meal by Wednesday.
We hope to see you at an upcoming program! For details on all of these activities, you can visit our site at www.FrederickCountyMD.gov/Virtual50, and we’re always happy to answer any questions by phone, email, or in person—just drop by!
