Thurmont Senior Center

by by Tara Miller

As the leaves turn and crisp breezes roll in, Thurmont is buzzing with excitement for fall—and nowhere is that spirit more alive than at the Thurmont Senior Center. October brings a full calendar of events, laughter, and community connection, starting with one of our favorite traditions: the Annual Yard Sale.

On October 9, 10, and 11, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., our yard sale will be in full swing. All items are available by donation, and every dollar raised supports programs that bring fellowship and joy to Thurmont’s seniors.

We’re thrilled to announce two new opportunities for fellowship: Stitch and Chat and Craftin’ in the Catoctins.

Stitch and Chat is held twice a month on Mondays at 1:00 p.m. Bring your crochet, knitting, cross-stitch, or other handwork projects and enjoy a relaxing afternoon of stitching and socializing.

Craftin’ in the Catoctins is held twice a month on Thursdays at 1:00 p.m. This guided crafting group will explore a variety of creative projects, led by our wonderful volunteers and me.

I am very excited to be the new coordinator at the Senior Center! Please come in and say hello. I am a former kindergarten teacher, and I most recently worked at the Thurmont Library. I live on a small farm in Rocky Ridge with my husband, two young adult children, and a crew of rescue cats I care for through my own cat rescue.

Last month was packed with games, exercise, and good company. We hosted two lively bingo sessions, played Farkle, Bridge, Pinochle, and Poker, and enjoyed plenty of coffee, tea, and treats. This month, we invite you to join us for Balance & Strength Exercise sessions,  Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, from 11:00 to 11:45 a.m.; cards and games on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday at 1:00 p.m.; Bingo on the first and third Wednesday of the month (Special Bingo if there is a fifth Wednesday in the month); and Zumba, Poker & 500 on Fridays.

Take advantage of our Fitness Corner, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., featuring treadmills, stair climber, and recumbent bike—all free to use!

Join us for lunch, which is served daily at noon, for just $7.00. Please call the day before to reserve your meal. Menus are available at the center, on Facebook, and at thurmontseniorcenter.org. Thanks to our amazing local restaurant partners: Bollinger’s, Fratellis, Mountain Gate, Rocky’s, and Kountry Kitchen. We’ve been able to return $35,000 to the community through our lunch program. Your support makes it all possible!

We’re proud to partner with the YMCA’s “Y on the Fly” program, offering evening classes at the center. Looking for a venue? The Senior Center is available to rent for baby showers, birthdays, bridal showers, and more.

With flu season upon us, we kindly ask that anyone feeling under the weather stay home to help keep our community safe. For the latest updates on activities and lunch menus, visit our website, follow us on Facebook, or stop by the center to pick up a calendar.

Questions? Call Us! Reach out anytime at 301-271-7911. Membership is always free, and while some activities may have a small fee, the friendships and fun are priceless.

We can’t wait to welcome you—come laugh, play, and share in the joy of community at the Thurmont Senior Center.
