Thurmont Senior Center
by Kristen Bodmer
The warmth of spring has finally arrived. I am certainly enjoying the beauty of the trees and flowers starting to bloom. Stop into the Thurmont Senior Center for some fun and laughter and maybe a cup of coffee or tea. We look forward to seeing you. You will find we are a place to come to have a great lunch and find laughter and friendship. You are never too old to make new friends and to learn new things. Hopefully, everyone is enjoying the extra hour of daylight now.
April is full of activities. Take the opportunity to come and enjoy the calendar of events we have scheduled. You can find our calendar on our website at thurmontseniorcenter.org and on Facebook. Or, come into the Thurmont Senior Center, and we will happily get you one.
I wanted to share with you about our monthly fundraiser at Roy Rogers. It is on the second Thursday of the month. Carol Long and Nancy Rice head up this fantastic fundraiser for us. They use their magical baking skills to create delicious goodies for you to enjoy after or before your Roy Rogers meal. We also get 25 percent of the sales of that evening when you mention the Thurmont Senior Center. I wanted to highlight this fundraiser because these lovely ladies make all of their wonderful treats homemade and fresh. They use their own money to purchase all of the flour, sugar, eggs, brown sugar, Crisco sticks, and more. They do this in order for the center to receive all of the proceeds. They have earned as much, if not more, than some of the grants we received. They do not do it for recognition; they do it because they love the Thurmont Senior Center. They work hours in their kitchens to make delicious baked goods, including coconut cake, red velvet cake, apple dumplings, peach dumplings, cinnamon rolls, and all kinds of cookies, pies, and more. I hope you take a moment to stop by Roy Rogers to get some of their wonderful treats—you will not be disappointed. Make sure to come early because they are known to sell out. Thank you, Nancy and Carol, for your selflessness in order to bring extra money to the center. It does not go unnoticed! If you would like to donate anything, bring it by the center and I will make sure they get it.
We have such a great time each and every Bingo day. It is a time to get together with friends for a fun day. You can start by ordering lunch and eating with us before Bingo starts. We get lunch that day from Mountain Gate. To play Bingo—which is 20 games—is $5.00. We play 10 games and then have a halftime. We play Bingo every first, third, and fifth Wednesday of every month. It is always a fun time, full of laughter and special homemade treats for halftime. Halftime is absolutely amazing. We have so many goodies, you would not believe it. Carol Long plans a big spread, and lots of people bring even more goodies. All I can say is that you will not go away hungry. It really is a great time, and we would love to have you and your friends join us.
We would love for you to join us for a free balance and strength exercise session on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, beginning at 11:00-11:45 a.m. We also have Zumba.
Like to play games? We play many games, including Pinochle on Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. and Poker. We have Bunko on the second Thursday of the month and Farkle on the fourth Thursday.
Just a reminder that some activities may have a minimal cost but to join the center is free.
I can’t forget to mention our coffee. We are told it is the best, so come in and have a cup with us.
Don’t forget that the Thurmont Senior Center is available to rent for different activities such as a baby shower, a birthday party, or a bridal shower. As always if you have questions or want more information, don’t hesitate to call us at 301-271-7911.
