Community Difference Maker

Brenda Gonder

Brenda Gonder of Thurmont has a gift for bringing smiles and comfort to everyone she meets.

Affectionately known as the “Queen of Weis,” many recognize her as the friendly face greeting them at the self-checkout at Weis Markets in Thurmont.

For 18 years, Gonder has gone beyond her role, brightening the community with warm welcomes, a listening ear, and simple, yet heartfelt advice. Though she humbly insists, “It’s just my job, hun,” countless customers would argue she does far more than what’s required.

Gonder especially loves the children that come through the store. During the holidays, she dresses in festive attire and hands out candy—purchased with her own money—just to see the joy on their faces. Many children even call her “Grandma,” a title she wears with pride.

Gonder, who officially retired years ago, said she only planned to work at Weis Markets for one year, but it is the customers who have kept her coming back. Through the years, Gonder said that the customers have become like family—she has been there through deaths, marriages, and babies being born.

“Putting a smile on your face makes you feel better and may make someone else feel better. We never know what someone is going through,” said Gonder.

It is not just her job that keeps her giving back to the community. Over the years, she and her family have participated in organizations like 4-H, Girl Scouts, and Special Olympics.

“If you’re not part of the community, you’re like crabgrass in the yard—you’re just there,” expressed Gonder, embodying the spirit of connection and kindness that make her so beloved.
