Thurmont Food Bank Receives Two Large Donations

The Thurmont Food Bank recently received two large donations.

The first came from the Scouting for Food Collection, which netted over 6,500 pounds of food through a collection sponsored by local Scout Troops. Cub Scout Pack 270, Scouts BSA Troop 270B and 270G, and Venturing Crew 270 participated in Scouting’s National Scouting for Food drive, which is the biggest service project our Scouts participate in annually. The Scouting units in the town of Thurmont worked together to cover the whole town, and on the first Saturday of November, they distributed bags and Post-it notes to every house in Thurmont. Then, on the second Saturday, they collected the donations from residential front porches. Thank you to the community members who donated food items; to Weis Market; and to the Scouts, their leaders, and their parents, who participated in collecting, sorting, and storing the food.

The second amazing food donation was sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day Saints. A tractor-trailer full of food traveled from Salt Lake City to Thurmont to provide food for nine food banks in Frederick County. This food is much needed and appreciated by all the food banks that received it! Thanks to the many volunteers who helped, as well as to the Town of Thurmont and The Ole Mink Farm for the use of equipment to unload the 22 pallets of food.

The Thurmont Food Bank is located at 10 Frederick Road, across from the town park. It serves Northern Frederick County and is open from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, and from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Friday. It will be closed on December 24 and December 31. Donations of non-perishable food can be dropped off anytime in the entryway, and perishable food can be dropped off on Tuesday and Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
