AMVETS Post 7, Thurmont
We hope everyone had a blessed Thanksgiving. The Sons of the AMVETS Post 7 had a busy November. The Sons hosted a Veterans/community breakfast on November 10, which allowed us to serve 76 Veterans a free breakfast, as well as 275 community members. We would like to thank everyone who attended, everyone who helped out, and everyone who donated to the event.
Our Sons group visited Homewood at Crumland Farms in Frederick on November 11 to assist them with serving some of their Veterans a breakfast, honoring them for their service. They have 131 Veterans living at their facility, of which 60 were able to attend. Military-themed songs were played for each branch, as well as a brief program to round off the event. We visit them monthly to enjoy coffee with donuts and exchange different military stories along with tales of everyday life.
The Sons also have a very busy December ahead, with many programs we do to support our Veterans. We are purchasing $1,500 worth of insulated undergarments for the homeless Veterans in the North Point transition center. Reintegrate back into being productive members of society, and graduating from there with a job, money, a place to live, and a new start to a better life. We will also purchase each Veteran a $100 gift card for Christmas, as well as sweatshirts along with T-shirts for Second Chance Hero Ridge to be distributed to those who visited the Second Chance Mountain Retreat. These programs are spearheaded by the Department of Maryland Sons of AMVETS, along with support from Maryland Amvets Squadrons. The programs are supported by grant money and donations.
The AMVETS are always looking to recruit new members. If you are interested, stop by for an application to see if you are eligible to join. We hope everyone has a blessed Christmas and a safe and happy New Year. Remember to check your calendars for special anniversary and notable days that Veterans reflect on. They are all not holidays, unfortunately, but they do have meaning to those who have served.
