New Commissioner Seated in Emmitsburg
James Rada, Jr.
The Emmitsburg Board of Commissioners saw a new face seated during the October town meeting.
Kevin Hagan was sworn in as an Emmitsburg Town Commissioner, along with incumbent commissioners, Cliff Sweeney and Jim Hoover. They were the three top vote-getters during the October 1 Emmitsburg Town Election.
First-time commissioner Hagan is a long-time resident of Emmitsburg, who has served on Emmitsburg Planning Commission and has been a member of the Emmitsburg Business and Professional Association.
The results of the election were: Cliff Sweeney (124 votes); Jim Hoover (116 votes); Kevin Hagan (82 votes); Rosario Benvengi (60 votes).
One hundred and fifty ballots were cast among the 2,020 registered voters in Emmitsburg. This is a 7.4 percent voter turnout.
Commissioner Tim O’Donnell, who chose not to run for re-election after serving on the board since 2009, was thanked by the other commissioners for his service. Although he will no longer serve on the board, he will continue serving the town. The Board of Commissioners appointed him as a member of both the Emmitsburg Parks and Recreation Committee and the Emmitsburg Planning Commission.
Because of O’Donnell’s decision to not continue on the board, three seats were open during this election. Because of this, Sweeney and Hoover, as the top two vote-getting candidates, will serve three-year terms, while Hagan, as the third place vote-getter, will serve a one-year term so that it will expire at the same time as Board President Amy Boehman-Pollitt’s term.
Incumbent commissioners Cliff Sweeney and Jim Hoover are sworn in alongside new commissioner Kevin Hagan to serve on the Emmitsburg Town Council.
