The library is seeking Memory
Lab volunteers (ages 18 and
older), who can commit time to a
special service we will be providing
this year. Funded in part by the
Maryland State Department of
Education and Institute of Museum
and Library Services, Memory
Lab provides free equipment to
digitize photographs and video.
Volunteers will be trained and will
assist members of the public in
safekeeping their family memories.
Attendance at a training session,
to be held February 25 or 26,
2018, is required. To get more

We’re commemorating Black
History Month with a special
program hosted by AARCH,
Frederick County’s African American
Resources – Cultural and Heritage
organization. Titled, “Held in
Regard,” the program will focus on
the people, places, and events we
respect and value in telling the African
American history of Frederick County.
The program—for all ages—explores
a rich, historical thread that weaves
throughout our local history. The
program is scheduled for Tuesday,
February 20, 2018, at 7:00 p.m.

15. New this year, and due to the
popularity of this event, tickets will
be limited to two a person. Tickets
will be handed out on Saturday,
March 3, 2018, starting at 10:00
a.m., at both the Emmitsburg and
Thurmont libraries.

Families with kids in grades
K-8 are invited to a special Digital
Learning Day on February 22,
2018. This national celebration
recognizes that it can be hard to
keep up with the latest and greatest
advancements in educational
technology. Digital Learning Day
was started in 2012, as a way
to actively spread innovative
practices and ensure that all youth
have access to high-quality digital
learning opportunities, no matter
where they live. Digital Learning
Day is not about technology, it’s
about learning and the effective
use of modern-day tools, afforded
to every other industry, to improve
the learning experience in public
schools. Thurmont Regional
Library’s Digital Learning Day starts
at 5:30 p.m. and is a partnership
between Frederick County Public
Schools and Frederick County
Public Libraries. Snow date for this
special event is March 1, 2018.
Special programs in February
2018:
The Catoctin Banner Newspaper
On Tuesday, February 13, at 6:30
p.m., children, ages up to ten, are
to dance and create seasonal crafts.
Bring mom, dad, sister, or brother—
just bring the one or ones you love.
Come to All About Owls on
Friday, February 16, at 3:30 p.m.
This program is for all ages to learn
about owls with a naturalist from
one of our community partners,
Cunningham Falls State Park. Their
visit will include a live owl, plus
hands-on activities.
Escape Room on Monday,
February 19, at 1:00 p.m. School is
out and it’s time to escape. Middle
and High students are invited to
solve a series of President’s Day
clues to breakout before time is up.
In case you don’t know, an escape
room is a physical adventure game,
in which players solve a series of
puzzles and riddles using clues,
hints, and strategies to complete the
objectives at hand.
The library community, as well
as the general Frederick County
community, lost one of its strongest
supporters in December. It was
with great sadness that I heard that
Victor Jagow passed away. He truly
will not be forgotten. His impact on
February 2018 Page 41
the library cannot be overstated. He
served on both our local Thurmont
Library Board and on the Frederick
County Board of Trustees. Vic
championed a larger, improved
library facility for Thurmont, not
once, but two times, resulting in
better services for local citizens.
On the deck of the Thurmont
Regional Library on May 15, 2010,
Vic was recognized for his many
contributions to the library and
to other local organizations when
we hosted Victor Jagow Day. The
Coachman, his son Gary’s band
in the mid-1960s, reunited for a
concert on our standing-room only
deck to honor Vic, who had been
their manager, driving them to
their gigs in a second-hand hearse.
Vic, always humble and giving,
said that day was one of the best
days of his life. It was a small way
for Thurmont to give back to this
generous man, who gave his talent
and time to many organizations.
At that event, he was recognized
for his good works as “a citizen, a
volunteer, and a man of faith.” At
the time, I was quoted as saying
“Everybody loves Vic,” and I
stand by that statement. He will be
missed.
