Garbage Man Photography
Written by Lori Wynn; Submitted by Sara Gernand
This poem was written by my mother, Bernadette “Bernie” Warrenfeltz, in 1963. She used the
pen name Lori Wynn. It was in the honor of our local trash collector, Walter “June” Benchoff.
My parents and the Benchoffs were neighbors in Sabillasville in the 1950s and 1960s.
If we turn up our nose at him A dire menace to our health
Who hauls our garbage off Of our community
Or if we feel the least inclined We ought to be more conscious of
To ridicule or scoff His most important deed
We ought to stop and ask ourselves Because in doing what he does
How we would live today He fills a vital need
If no one ever gathered it He helps promote the cleanliness
And carted it away Of houses and cafes
The odor would be bad enough And for his service he deserves
But also there would be Our gratitude and praise Photo taken by Michele Tester in August 2011. The praying
mantis was sitting atop her fence.
