Yesterday Kid’s Memories
of Thurmont
by Larry Freshman
by Francis Smith
Memories float through this old brain of mine
With little concept of order or time Great God of mountain splendor
how greater far than these
They are like a scrapbook filled to the brim
With thoughts of people and places that the passing of time just can’t dim who thrust their mighty summits
into Your misty heaven!
Dear old Thurmont High School where lasting friendships were earned How wondrous is Your beauty
A place of contagious laughter and many valuable lessons were learned the mystic which is You
grander than the grandeur
Across from the school was Charlie Hobbs’ store of peaks the clouds pursue!
We kids would visit for soda, candy and goodies galore
Lift my murky feet
On the corner of Carroll Street, Jim and Mary’s roses were a magnificent sight above the dust of earth,
And to every passerby they were a joyous delight raise them to the heights
wherein You hold adobe
Pokey Miller’s Bakery was also located on Carroll with the best pies, cakes and bread and let my spirit soar aloft
But when you entered or exited you had to watch your head beyond the eagles’ ken
fly me with Your angels
There was the Thurmont Bank on the square and Buck Lewis’ garage across the street
And Ray and Lillian Dominique’s Ice Cream Parlor with many a sweet treat exalt this least of men!
Harry Otis Miller’s Barber Shop was located beneath the bank
A barber by trade but in the Fire Company I think Chief was his rank
Bruce and Lois Davie’s jewelry store was really quite small
But it contained many beautiful items for one and all
Hobbs Hardware was located on West Main near the bank’s corner space
Aunt Lillian kept the books but Eddie was boss of the place
Harry Smith’s store was farther up the street
With many fashionable shoes to make your outfit complete
The library was located in an old house on West Main
I went there to study, more knowledge to gain
Those excuses to my parents for more study time at the library was a bit chancy
I wonder if they knew I was really going to see my girlfriend, Nan-cy?
Possie Sauble’s store was near Buck Lewis’ garage and sold beer, wine and ice
If I remember correctly, I believe one of his employees was Petey Brice P a t r o n i z e o u r a d v e r t i s e r s !

ranging from magazines to ice cream
And at Christmas, the upstairs became Toyland, the answer to every kid’s dream
I remember Hershey’s 5 and 10 cent store run by Corrine and Ray
A special memory was of the colored peepies in the window on Easter Day
Down Water Street was a grocery store managed by Anne
With produce, meats and a variety of goods with the Acme brand
On down the street was the State Theater where great movies could be seen
As a kid I went there to see Francis the Talking Mule on the big movie screen
I’ve got to stop all this remembering it’s giving my head a real pain
You know sometimes it’s not easy walking down memory lane
I’m sure with some rest, I’ll be right back on track
You know what that means... the kid will be back
