A Love Letter to My Sons…
by Kiona Black
Fifteen years ago at this very hour I was in full blown labor
with the first of the three true loves of my life. Getting there
was a feat of monumental proportions considering that the
doctors at Hopkins had told me 12 weeks prior that you would
be born too early and promptly die. I spent those 12 weeks
waking every morning thankful that you decided to “bake” one more day.
So Wyatt and I waged a battle together on March 9th and into the 10th. I
had to refuse pain medication because it was ACC tournament time and could
not ponder missing a game. He and I fought together, silently dismissing the
concerns of all the doctors knowing full well we were stubborn enough to prove
them wrong. Just after noon on the 10th Wy came by emergency C-Section.
Deemed a preemie, he quickly showed everyone that he was in it to win it. Duke
not only pulled off the ACC tourney that year but took the national title as well.
Just over a year later, Nathan came along requiring another stint of complete
bed rest. The doctor told me I had to deliver on August 5th because I wouldn’t
make it any longer than that. The problem was I had a golf tournament to run
in honor of their grandmother that day so I informed him that NateDog and I
would meet him at the hospital on the 6th. Sure enough another stubborn Black
boy made it into the world.
Forward to 2010 when I supposedly had a procedure that made it impossible
for anymore babies...we call him Eaves. Probably the most stubborn of us all, he
demonstrates everyday what happens when someone is meant to be here. Did
I mention that Duke took another title that year? I watched that tourney, sick
as a dog, thinking something was horribly wrong and not realizing Eaves was
already on his way.
So, my amazingly wonderful, against all odds sons, this is what I want you
to know. Despite how great I thought I was before March 10, 2001 and despite
what I do professionally, I did not achieve greatness until I was allowed the
privilege to become your mother.
We got this Black Boys & I’m truly thankful that, of all my traits you
inherited, you got my bullheadedness. Momma loves you and with your dad, we
once again will show them all who is in charge!
