Emmitsburg Area Fire and Life Safety
Open House – All are welcome!
The men and women of the community’s fire, rescue and emergency medical
services proudly announce their Annual Fire and Life Safety Open House on
Thursday, October 11, from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the fire station located
at 25 West Main Street. This is the 63rd year that Vigilant Hose Company
(VHC) personnel have sponsored this always-popular event.
Fire and injury prevention is a year-round effort done in concert with area
residents, businesses, schools, institutions and governmental agencies, but it’s
during “Fire Prevention Month” that department personnel seek to especially
underscore the importance of prevention and preparedness.
Fire Prevention Week is October 7-13. The Theme for National Fire Prevention
Month (October) is “Look. Listen. Learn. Be aware. Fire can happen anywhere.”
As part of the VHC’s continuing efforts to educate everyone about
essential elements of smoke alarm safety, this year’s open house will include:
information and demonstrations to help families and individuals prevent
unwanted fire; fire and life safety preparedness information to help attendees
prepare, in advance, for unwanted fire or other emergency be it at home,
at work and/or at play; emergency medical service providers to showcase
life-saving skills and conduct blood pressure checks on request; VHC
personnel showcasing smoke detectors and offering information on disaster
preparedness and insight on assistance provided following major emergencies;

Center to assist residents better understand how ‘911’ works and why the
information they need from callers is so vitally important; information
regarding opportunities for residents and businesses alike to help their first
responders; details about the countywide “Gear-Up” Campaign – a volunteer
recruitment initiative; Frederick County Resident Deputy Sheriffs on hand
