Barr is the former chair and a continuing board member of the National
Civil War Museum in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He will sign books and
answer questions about his intriguing subjects, whose correspondence
survived unpublished until last year. Their letter survived, along with family
photos, in a rural Victorian cabin in Wisconsin, far from the principals’ place
of introduction and later married life in Illinois. The book treats its young
subjects sensitively, reproducing their correspondence and providing the
historical context that the twenty-something couple lived but that modern
readers might not know. By day, Barr is the president and CEO of the
Pennsylvania Chamber of Business Industry, and a member of the US Chamber
Board of Directors and of the United Way of the Capital Region.
EOPCC is delighted to host his book signing in the context of a Victorian
tea on Emmitsburg’s Heritage Day on June 24. In 2005, EOPCC renovated
historic properties (Federalist and Victorian periods) at 121-123 West Main
Street, for use as a not-for-profit medical practice. The tea, charging $10.00 per
person, is a fundraiser to aid in amortizing the building debt, and will feature
tea and cakes from period White House recipes of the Federalist to the Teddy
Roosevelt eras.
Yesterday Until today
Norman harvested this sunny Sunday
corn in the field while the sun is slowly sinking
behind our house down the silver sky
before the mountains to sleep beneath dark hills
green-chop the call it. i see that cornfield once again
no more a muddy quagmire;
The day before a zillion tiers of tiny suns
it rained so bedeck the sodden soil
the harvester gouged deep ruts to glisten ‘tween the rows
between the cornstalk rows the twinkle of gazillion stars
whatta muddy mess! sparking to outshine
Ole Sol himself
Last night and so to rest in glory!
it rained again
one veritable cloudburst
outpouring another
vast quagmire.
